The Latin-American tire industry continues its expansion, as international tire-machinery players speed up their local-service roll-out. Dutch tire-building equipment specialist VMI has inaugurated its brand-new service facility in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, aiming to strengthen technical maintenance and support for local tire manufacturers.

Dutch tire-machinery manufacturer VMI Group has officially opened its service facility in Leon. Situated in Leon, Guanajuato – part of Mexico’s Bajio tire-manufacturing cluster home to production sites of Michelin, Pirelli and other major tire brands – the area has a fast-growing installed base of tire equipment, generating strong demand for on-site technical services.
Spanning approximately 1,000 m², the new facility houses a dedicated drum workshop and delivers equipment maintenance, technical support and customer-training services. It has been built in line with sustainability standards for waste management and energy consumption. A tree-planting activity was held after the inauguration ceremony, aligning with VMI’s recent EcoVadis Platinum sustainability rating.
The opening-ceremony attendees included Fonseca, state subsecretary; Rodriguez, deputy mayor of Leon; and Harm Voortman, CEO of VMI Group, together with customer representatives and VMI local-team members. Concurrent with the launch, a customer seminar was organised to showcase VMI’s latest tire-building machines and complete tire-component-preparation solutions.
“The facility in Leon, the drum workshop and our local presence will help us support customers in Mexico more efficiently, with faster response times and enhanced levels of service,” commented Harm Voortman.
The inauguration marks another milestone in VMI’s global-network expansion. It follows the recent launch of the company’s sales-and-support office in Yokohama, Japan, which VMI regards as an important market.
In recent years, substantial tire-production capacity has shifted into Mexico, driving rapid growth in installed tire-building and component-processing equipment. Reliance purely on remote assistance plus overseas-dispatched technicians brings drawbacks of slow response and high operational costs. By establishing a local workshop and skilled technical workforce, VMI addresses the on-site maintenance requirements of Latin-American tire producers, moving beyond pure equipment sales toward an integrated “equipment + local-on-site-service” business model. This represents a prevailing trend for international tire-machinery suppliers.
